DNAR

"An 82 year old male patient has been admitted to the general medical ward from a nursing home with a few days history of generally feeling unwell. A diagnosis of pneumonia is made and treatment with antibiotics is initiated. The patient is dehydrated and therefore intravenous fluids are commenced. Oxygen saturations are 85% on room air and to maintain adequate oxygenation, oxygen supplementation is given via nasal cannula. Few days into admission, the patient’s recovery has been poor. He is drowsy but rousable. You have been asked by your senior colleagues to discuss DNAR with immediate family."
